 | | Suicide Glam started in a residential garage in Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia. The company was simply two young guys with a cutting-edge sense of design and a lot of ambition. After several years of making their own clothes for themselves and their admiring friends, with a single employee, they opened a tiny store in downtown Kuta and waited to see what would happen.
The history of the owners was slightly unusual for Indonesia. Made Parwata, the designer, had previously owned and run his own small art gallery in artistic Ubud, Gianyar ( Bali ) marketing mainly is own work. Rudolf Dethu, the propagandist, had spent 5 years touring the world as a waiter on a series of cruise ships and come back with a massive collection of alternative music and awesome shirts + running his own radio program yet becoming a contributor for certain music magazines. Their shared love of music, art and fashion (they'd grown up in the same neighbourhood) was what fueled the first designs, and remains their passion until today.
For the first couple of years they concentrated on menswear, as that was what they knew best. Sales and interest in their product increased, and they were able to move into a bigger store, in Poppies II, Kuta, which remains their flagship store. As overseas sales grew steadily they started to develop a woman's line as well. At the same time they opened a small factory so that they could fully control the production process, especially in terms of quality and artistry. Quality remains their number one concern as high-quality clothing lines are unusual and typically hard to find in Indonesia.
Today, 2007, seven years on, the company is still expanding. It already has around 25 employees, the third store in Bali (Legian main road), a long-standing branch in Germany + the brand new branch in New South Wales, authorized distributors in Western Australia, Queensland, and Victoria (all in Australia); and the released of the kids' line: Kid Glam.
Production capability has expanded and their factory now has a "state of the art" rotary silkscreening and electric press, sophisticated Japanese sewing machines, and an overseas consultant for patternmaking and grading. SG now also exports to Austria, Spain, Britain, Canada, Australia & even South America (Colombia). Meanwhile Suicide Glam, within Indonesia, is considered the bravest and hottest collection available, frequently worn by the most famous actors, models and Rock musicians. The concept remains the same: Glampunkabilly (influenced by glam rock, Punk attitude and Rockabilly style--think Sid Vicious meets David Bowie vs Stray Cats). There is no other clothing label like Suicide Glam throughout the nation and they are ever proud that a small, self start up label like them, Indonesian designed (100% by themselves), could become the first ever fully Balinese garment line to succesfully design and produce for both export and domestic markets.
